A future for the past

Bavaria has been training archivists for the 3rd qualification level at the Bavarian Archive School since 1924, until - in 1974 - the University of Applied Sciences for Bavarian civil servants (today: HföD) was founded.
The training courses for archivists are conducted by practising professionals.
Theoretical studies as well as training-on-the-job have to be completed in Munich.

Based on the Bavarian Archives Act, the public archives' task is to archive documents of the Bavarian public authorities - i.e. the state, municipalities, universities and all other corporations, institutions and foundations under public law.

This means: all files, certificates, maps, film and audio-data as well as digital data which are no longer constantly required for administrative, judicial or legislative purposes have to be recorded, analyzed and evaluated as well as – if necessary – stored and preserved.

The oldest documents held by the State Archives of Bavaria date back to the 8th century.

The stocks of the State Archives in Munich, Amberg, Augsburg, Bamberg, Coburg, Landshut, Nuremberg and Würzburg are currently growing by approximately 4,000 linear meters annually.The studies at the FHVR aim to enable archivists-to-be to deal competently with different documents from over 1200 years. That entails physically preserving the documents as well as conveying their meaning.

First theoretical term 3 months of professional studies at the archive school in Munich
Introductory practical term 5 months of interning at Munich archives
Second theoretical term 5 months of professional studies at the archive school in Munich
Main practical term 7 months of interning at Munich archives
Third theoretical term 5 months of professional studies at the archive school in Munich
Final practical term 6 months of interning at Munich archives
Fourth theoretical term 5 months of professional studies at the archive school in Munich
ending with the final exam (3rd qualification Level)

 

The so called "Verordnung über den fachlichen Schwerpunkt Archivwesen (FachV-Arch)" of 3rd January 2014 serves as legal basis for the program.
